Chrissie Wellington is a two-time world champion and world record-holder in one of the planet’s most gruelling sports – Ironman. A triathlon in the extreme, Ironman’s full-length version involves a 2.4-mile swim followed by a 112-mile bike ride and a marathon 26.2-mile run. The Ironman 70.3 is a half-Ironman race, one of a series held throughout the year, which athletes can use to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in October. This particular one, in the lovely sounding New Hampshire, is Wellington’s preferred warm-up for the World Championships. Last year she was the sixth person to finish and the first woman in a time of 4:11.46, some 19 minutes ahead of the next female. Wellington recently smashed the women’s Ironman world record by over 13 minutes in Germany. Wellington finished in 8:31.59. That’s eight and a half hours of total exertion. Ludicrous.
